The Hidden Amazon Cost Most Sellers Never Notice

The Hidden Amazon Cost Most Sellers Never Notice

Most Amazon sellers watch their shipping costs.

Far fewer pay attention to placement fees.

That can be a mistake.

Recently, our team was preparing an FBA shipment for a private-label brand. The shipment itself was straightforward: a little over 2,000 units headed into Amazon’s network.

As we built the shipment, something looked off.

Amazon was showing placement fees between $522 and $783.

For a shipment of this size, that immediately caught our attention.

Many fulfillment providers would simply process the shipment, send the invoice, and move on. After all, Amazon generated the fees.

Instead, we stopped and investigated.

After reviewing the shipment structure and Amazon’s receiving requirements, it appeared that the small product size was causing Amazon to treat the inventory as more labor-intensive to receive. That classification was driving significantly higher placement fees than expected.

Rather than forcing the shipment through, we rebuilt it.

We reduced the initial shipment quantity, adjusted the carton configuration, and restructured the replenishment plan to better align with Amazon’s optimized placement options.

The Result

  • Placement fees dropped from $522-$783 to $0
  • Shipping costs remained low
  • The remaining inventory was sent in a later replenishment cycle
  • The client avoided hundreds of dollars in unnecessary fees

The client never asked us to do this. In fact, they likely never would have known the difference.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about Amazon fulfillment. Most sellers think fulfillment is about receiving inventory, applying labels, and shipping boxes. The real value comes from understanding how Amazon’s constantly changing rules impact costs. A shipment can be packed correctly and still be unnecessarily expensive.

At THE SWIFTHOUSE, we spend a lot of time looking for those opportunities because small operational decisions compound over time.

Saving a few hundred dollars on one shipment may not seem like much.

Saving a few hundred dollars on every shipment for years is a completely different story.

Amazon’s fees are complicated enough. Your fulfillment partner should help reduce them, not simply pass them through.
